Aleksey Umnov is an alumnus of the Ryazan choral chapel for boys and young men «Lubomyr». He has graduated from the Ryazan music college (named after Grigorii and Aleksandr Pirogov), from the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory (named after Aleksandr Glazunov) and has finished postgraduate studying in academic choir conducting.
Since 2009 he has been teaching in Petrozavodsk conservatory at the Conducting Department. Now he is working as a senior lecturer. In different years he worked with different choirs and ensembles. In 2006-2008 he was a choirmaster of the students' Academic choir in Petrozavodsk State University.
In 2007 Aleksei founded Karelian Male Choir and since then has been working there as an art director. Although the choir is amateur, it has gained public admiration not only in Russia but also abroad. The choir tours in Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Poland, Belorus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Austria, Switzerland. It has such titles as Peoples Ensemble of Amateur Art of the Republic of Karelia and Honoured Ensemble of the Russian Federation.
In 2016 Aleksei Umnov established a unique Male Choir Singing Centre in Petrozavodsk. Now there are boys and men aged from 4 to 55 years.
Aleksei Umnov is a laureate of the Karelian Soul award from Ministry of Culture of the republic, has grateful letters from the Ministry of Culture and the Head of the region, Certificate of Merit from the Head of Karelia.
