It's the youngest music team in the Karelian Philharmonic and the first-ever professional choir in Karelia. The first rehearsal was held only on 2nd July 2020. The debut concert was held at the IV music festival Ruskeala Symphony (in the programme there were compositions of Sergei Taneyev, Georgy Sviridov, Yuri Falik).
The idea of founding this choir belongs to Aleksei Umnov – an alumnus of the Ryazan choral chapel for boys and young men Lubomyr, senior lecturer at the choir conducting department. His initiative was supported by the Head of Karelia – Artur Parfenchikov and by the deputies of the republic Parliament. The choir was founded with the federal grant money, which had been gotten by the Region for the effective work of the executive branch authorities. Aleksei Umnov is known as a highly qualified musician and an effective conductor of the boys' choirs at the Centre of Male Choir Singing and of the Karelian Male Choir, which are well-known not only in Russia but also abroad.
At the moment, there are 16 members of the Male Chamber Choir of the Karelian State Philharmonic, most of which are the graduates of the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory (named after Aleksandr Glazunov).
During four concert seasons the Male Chamber Choir has managed to perform not only within the Republic of Karelia (Petrozavodsk, Ruskeala, Kondopoga, Medvezhegorsk, Olonets and Pitkyaranta), but also in such Russian cities as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Yaroslavl, Ivanovo, Nizhny Novgorod, Cherepovets, Vologda, Semyonov, Gorodets and Rostov Veliky.
The Male Chamber Choir under the direction of Aleksei Umnov prepared and successfully performed the following concert programmes: Сhevaliers’ Serenade; Premier Concert; Christmas Concert; Ludwig van Beethoven "Symphony No.9"; Lorenzo Perosi "Requiem"; Russian sacred music (Pavel Chesnokov, Georgy Sviridov); Adaptations of folk songs; Vadim Salmanov "Good Young Man"; "Easter Concert"; "Songs from the front"; Sergei Prokofiev "Alexander Nevsky"; "Songs of the North"; Francis Poulenc "Gloria"; Igor Stravinsky "The Star-Faced One"; Sergei Taneyev "16 Choruses on Poems by Konstantin Balmont"; Cesar Cui "Nine Vocal Quartets"; Polina Kryshen "Petroglyphs" and others.
The choir actively cooperates with composers from Karelia, Russia, Finland and Canada. In May and December (on Easter and Christmas), 2021 the Big Concert Hall of the Karelian State Philharmonic hosted special concerts by Moscow composer Anton Viskov. In the spring of 2022 the choir took part in concert events of the XXI Moscow Easter Festival under the direction of maestro Valery Gergiev. In autumn it took part in the first Festival of Male Choirs in Krasnoyarsk. In the summer of 2023 the Karelian Philharmonic Male Choir once again took part in the VII Ruskeala Symphony International Music Festival.
